Where Love and Timing Merge on the Marketing Road

Written by: Kathryn DiGennaro

Anyone’s career path is never a straight trajectory. Technically, two paths led me to a marketing career. The first one is love. After college, I moved back home to settle myself and determine my next steps. My (now husband) college boyfriend and I were not engaged yet; he was living in Jackson, MS.

Fast forward a few years later, and we are married and living in Jackson. I had been working as an independent consultant for a large beauty and makeup company, but I was eager to meet new people and try a new career path.

I landed a sales-type job at a local technology company (yes — big change from beauty to technology)! Having known nothing about technology (fiber, VoIP, and managed services), I truly didn’t know what I was getting into.

However, it ended up being a great fit for me personally and professionally, and I learned so much and created lifelong friendships. What more could you want from a career start in your mid-20s?

The second path is timing. I had a relationship with The Business Growers’ CEO through my former employer (also her former employer), and we remained in touch after she left. My heart was calling for my next career adventure, and long story short, here I am! With the knowledge I gained over the last five years and my marketing degree, TBG was a great fit to transition into.

Growth in Unexpected Ways

When I worked in the beauty industry after college, I had the opportunity to sell products and grow a team of women, helping them sell the products as well.

After two years, my team had grown to nearly 500 women. I learned so much during that time, from selling, learning, building confidence, and growing alongside others. I am so grateful and proud of myself for that chapter, and I know it has made me a better coworker and manager.

Processes and Customer Journeys

When I worked in my sales role at the technology company, I was able to really understand the customer side and what worked and didn’t work. I have taken that knowledge and applied it to the customer success side of TBG.

We have many processes for each of the services we provide. I have been able to use my experience and understanding to provide feedback for our processes for a better overall customer experience.

Ability to Accelerate Client Growth

One example of a stalled process I was able to ignite was when our content writer had written new pages for one of my client’s websites, and they sat with him for many weeks to review. For his website’s SEO, these new pages were very important and dependent on new growth for his SEO.

It’s important to remember our clients do not just meet with us. They are extremely busy and have a lot on their plate. During one of our scheduled bi-weekly meetings, instead of bringing new ideas to the call, we spent the hour reviewing those pages only, and it got the job done!

In terms of opportunity spotting, I encourage clients to think outside the box and try new marketing efforts like webinars, podcasts, and speaking opportunities.

I also take the time to hear what is important to the client from a marketing standpoint and how we can be an asset to that idea. This involves creating an overall strategy for the quarter — and year — and then consistently seeing those projects through.

A Path of Endless Progression

Personal connections and professional timing have shaped this journey into a marketing career at The Business Growers. Coming from diverse backgrounds, such as the beauty industry and tech sales, I have gained invaluable insights into customer needs and effective marketing strategies.

My experience in leading and mentoring teams, coupled with a deep understanding of customer satisfaction, has allowed me to contribute significantly to our processes, enhancing the overall client experience.

I feel that my career is marked by a passion for learning, a dedication to excellence, and a relentless drive to empower our clients to achieve their goals. As we continue to navigate marketing and business growth, I am excited to leverage my passion and experience to drive meaningful impact and success for our clients and team.
